Problem Based Learning in Virtual Environments

Virtual environments are slowly changing the process of knowledge delivery.
Problem based learning is the key to improve students' actual involvement in a learning process.

Mirroring real world problems onto a virtual learning management system or LMS is necessary to enhance the overall learning experience. In fact, virtual environments can make use of problem based learning strategies to a greater degree as compared to traditional classrooms. Modern tools and applications provide great assistance in facilitating group based problem solving and discussion sessions over unseen problems.

Traditional classroom courses extensively use problem based learning. After studying a chapter on a given topic, students are supposed to solve a set of problems. While the basic goal of this learning process is to improve the understanding and real world problem solving capabilities of a student, it often takes the form of a repulsive activity where model answers are expected from the student. Truly, this practice is not student centered. However, on the other hand, problem based learning strategies in virtual environments can be highly effective because of following reasons: 1. Constant refinement of questions and answers over a virtual learning platform becomes possible.

Demonstrating practical application of knowledge becomes easier. Online tools and applications can easily deliver chunks of information in the form of text, graphics and presentations. However, information delivery is not the same as the knowledge delivery.

There is a fundamental difference between the two.

So it is necessary to deliver information in a way so as to simplify the process of imparting knowledge over an LMS.

Problem based learning is about putting together facts, figures and multimedia in a useful way.
